You must introduce your dog to the cage as the cage will be alien to your dog, it will not understand its purpose and may become distressed if it is not introduced to the cage gradually.  This will hinder your progress with training your dog using the cage.

Step 1:

Start by making the cage, putting in bedding and toys and leaving the cage door open.  Allow your dog to go in and out of the cage with out being confined.  Play with your dog when they are in the cage so that they come to associate the cage as a friendly enviroment.

Step 2:

When your pet is happy with the cage and used to it, lock the cage door when they enter.  Exit the room for a few minutes and then return offering your dog lots of praise.  Do not let your dog out when it is barking or crying, wait untill they have settled otherwise they will think that if they bark they can come out.

Step 3:

Gradually build up the amount of time your pet is enclosed in the cage.  Ensuring they do not become distressed with the cage.   If your dog shows signs of distress reduce the time they are left in the cage.

Step 4:

Your dog should now be happy with the cage and being left in it.  Do not start using the cage as punishment as your pet will come to associate the cage in a negative way.
