There are several varieties of cocker spaniels, the english cocker spaniel both show and working type and the american cocker spaniel.
Cocker spaniels where originally bred to flush game towards hunters so untill recently most dogs had their tails docked, however it is now illegal to dock the tail unless the dog will be a working dog.
Typically they live for 11 to 12 years and are known as merry cockers because they are a little crazy (I know as I have one myself).
Breed standard sizes are:
Males: Height 38-43 cm (15-17 inch) Weight 13-15 kg
Females: Height 38-41 cm (15-16 inch) Weight 12-15 kg
